Very few relationships have aroused public interest as that of (then) HRH Prince Charles (Prince of Wales) and Lady Diana Spencer.
Their courtship was naturally scrutinised from the moment their engagement was announced. People far across the globe became enamoured, if not obsessed with the shy and retiring Diana, resulting in her affectionately becoming known as the “People’s Princess”.
The couple’s wedding was announced as taking place on 21st July 1981. The world was captivated, and I, for one (expect one of many), can vividly recall where I was on that day!
Aside from being a popular and historic Royal Union, the occasion immediately transformed the young Princess into an international icon, creating a deep public love and fascination that remains strong to this day.
The wedding itself, held at St Paul’s Cathedral, was, of course, a vast and splendid occasion and reportedly watched by an estimated 750 million people. Imagine that!
Diana’s famous gown, swathed in thousands of pearls and with the unforgettable 25ft train, attracted eulogies from the world’s “design elite”, doing David and Elizabeth Emmanuel’s reputation as the chosen designers no harm at all.
The global spectacle only served to fuel the public’s intense fascination for the couple who had attracted a fairy tale persona as regards their relationship. They would be scrutinised endlessly for years to come, which would unfortunately include the demise and very public deterioration of the relationship.
The rest, as we know, is history, but the fascination remains deep among many for both the occasion and the subsequent relationship.
I am pleased to be able to offer for sale a unique piece of history from this truly special event. I was recently lucky enough to discover an original Ceremonial Booklet (which is pretty much an order of service). It’s an interesting piece of historic Royal Memorabilia.
Printed by Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen by printers Harrison & Sons (London) Ltd, it would have been issued, I believe, to only certain attendees, outlining the day’s events with precision relative to scheduling, timings, and protocol.
As regards condition, the Ceremonial Booklet is overall very good, and it’s survived the last 44 years very well, pretty much unscathed. It does have some slight yellowing to the outer cover, both front and rear, and also has slight dirt/dust marking to the same associated with general handling and storage.
