The French translation of the decorative art concept Rocaille is akin to “shells, pebbles or rubble” and is one of the more defining features of the Rococo style of architectural influenced decoration to emanate from France specifically when King Louis XV was the reigning monarch throughout most of the Eighteenth Century. As the Baroque style was falling out of fashion and favour, the interest in natural science and nature sparked the introduction of the Rocaille style and movement.
